.... so if they'd teach us interesting things like HOW TO SYNTHESIZE VIAGRA or something, maybe I could stand the five hours of studying a day.
But damn, memorizing the fucking carbocation intermediates when making ethanol from ethylene is really, really tedious.
I can't believe there is an entire years' study devoted soley to the chemistry of FUCKING CARBON.
Why did I take a summer class? Why?
(thanks for listening)

Re: So boring....
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 9:44 PMI took organic with horrible lab in the summer too. It's just sheer torture, endless rote memorization, stinky chemicals, and no theme to hang it all on.. just more fucking memorization.
my sympathies are with you.

Re: So boring....
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 1:31 PMit is my firm belief that most of what passes for a profession's "education" is more of a hazing ritual.
kinda like, "We had to do this to get into this profession, so now YOU have to. CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG!!"
...but without the beer bong.

Re: So boring....
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 1:57 PMas we are carbon based life forms, i can see how they might focus on that one particular element.
but i agree with the hazing ritual comment: it's the same with law school and of course medical residencies. it's more about seeing how much shit you can put up with than what the actual task is worth. harsh. :/ -

perhaps one part of your personality is interested in subjecting the other part of your personality to torture, or maybe you just like the feeling of learning things, even if it is a bit painful. Thinking is, after all, a more effective way of stimulating brain cells than many of the chemical alternatives.

Re: So boring....
Wed, January 3, 2007 - 4:29 PMOrganic Chemistry is purely what is referred to as a weeder course. Sheer torture, or as many of your future peers would call it, a right of passage. Sure it's useful for other reasons, but most people who take it, never have to use it. Don't you love how humans love to pass pain onto future generations, mostly for the sole purpose of retribution. If I had to do it, then they will too dammit.

Thu, April 19, 2007 - 12:40 PMUC San Diego, Chem 143D (Adv. o-chem lab).
We actually have the students make viagra. And prozac.
Memorize nothing, no matter the subject. Instead, study mechanisms. By learning mechanisms, you learn form and function.
Cheers,
S.
